Breastfeeding during sleep and tooth decay

Breastfeeding in sleep is a mistake that all mothers make, resulting in tooth decay and other problems that you will read about below.

Tooth decay by breastfeeding a sleeping baby

Breastfeeding in sleep is a habit and behavior that is common among all mothers, but it should be noted that this type of breastfeeding can affect the health of the baby.

The dentist of Bushehr University of Medical Sciences said: “One of the wrong habits of mothers is breastfeeding their children while they are sleeping, which causes decay of deciduous teeth due to milk remaining in the mouth.” Decay of deciduous teeth and its development causes tooth loss, which causes stress in the child and causes insufficient chewing of food.

In addition, premature eruption of deciduous teeth closes the gap created by the surrounding teeth, which later causes problems with the eruption of the main tooth, such as occlusion or misalignment.

The dentist considered the interval between 6 and 9 years to be the most prone time for children’s tooth decay and said: If the teeth are well cared for at this age, sometimes the teeth will remain healthy for the rest of their lives.
Tongue on newly grown teeth does not cause them to tilt and sometimes even causes the teeth to grow better, although it should be noted that this should not be done intentionally and under pressure.
“It is very important to wash the mouth of a child who does not yet have teeth with a damp cloth,” he said. “It promotes oral hygiene, which is good for the growth of baby teeth.”
With the growth of the first baby tooth, it is necessary to clean the teeth with finger toothbrushes, and after the age of two, children’s toothbrushes can be used, and it is better for the parents to brush the child’s teeth themselves.
To better protect your teeth from decay, your doctor can perform procedures such as fissure sealant (fluorotherapy) and fluoride therapy from the day the first primary tooth grows.
